Dubs vow to avoid 2012 fiasco
After losing by 13 points to Galway last Sunday week, there were already conclusions being drawn about Anthony Daly’s side following up a fine season with a poor one.
Two years ago, Dublin were beaten handsomely by Kilkenny and then knocked out of the championship by Clare in the qualifiers.
The Leinster champions were relatively comfortable winners over Clare on Sunday though, indicating to Galway-born Corcoran the performance in Salthill was merely a blip.
“We learned a lot of lessons from 2012. We were never going to let that happen. We had a lesson learned from the Galway game and we knew what we had to do to rectify it.
“There was no panic button pressed or anything like that. We just had to look at ourselves and see if we could produce a performance. It was certainly not like 2012.
“Maybe we were caught a little bit on the hop. Galway were up for it after last year, maybe. Maybe they felt they had a point to prove, and we weren’t mentally tuned for that. Other than that, everything was going well.”
Corcoran made his first start of the season in Parnell Park on Sunday and he admits the Donnycarney venue could play into their hands when they face Kilkenny there on March 16, instead of Croke Park where they lost to the Cats in the Walsh Cup final earlier this month. “It’s always nice to play in Croke Park. Hopefully, in the summer time, we’ll get a few games there. (But) I suppose just from the point of view of getting the lads going again, maybe getting back to where you’re familiar with (Parnell Park) is no harm.”
Corcoran acknowledges another defeat, be it to Waterford on March 9, Kilkenny or Tipperary could put them in relegation difficulty.
“We probably can’t afford another defeat. It’s competitive enough. You want to qualify for quarter-finals. We want to try and win as many games as we can and if for nothing else, it prepares you well for Championship.”
