Ó Flatharta makes case for the defence
The former Westmeath and Galway boss is aware there is an urgency in the county for the team to be more positive in their approach this season.
Before Christmas, Colm Begley was scathing in his criticism of Ó Flatharta’s predecessor Justin McNulty’s style of football. Ahead of a Division 2 opener with Donegal, a pairing which provided a dour fourth-round qualifier last July, the Kerryman wants to infuse a positive emphasis on Laois’s game but not at the expense of what has been built at the back.
“Yes, we will be playing attacking football, but we’ll also have to mind the house at the other end of the field.
“We will attack but when we don’t have the ball everybody has to defend as a unit to get it back to start attacking again.”
In deciding to take the job, Ó Flatharta admitted he was enthused by the Laois County Board’s recognition that tactics had to change and a new vision would take time to bed in.
“They accepted that there was a need for improving game plans and improving players and making the team better, and they understood that those things don’t happen in 24 hours or in a week or so.
“They also assured that there would be facilities of good standard including pitches and gym facilities and all the supports that go with that.”
Ó Flatharta confirmed Begley’s recovery from a groin problem will sideline him until the latter part of the league, while Conor Boyle’s knee tendonitis could force him out for the season.
Captain Ross Munnelly and Kevin Meaney should be fit for Donegal’s upcoming visit to O’Moore Park.
