Mayo keep ’em waiting
The county board’s officers decided to keep their accounts and the secretary’s report under wraps until the meeting in order to ensure a good attendance at convention at Breaffy House Hotel tomorrow.
The board has come under fire in recent weeks with clubs demanding full transparency on how the county’s All-Ireland final tickets were allocated.
Ballina Stephenites also told the executive they would no longer continue to sell the county board’s €100 tickets while North Mayo was not being used as a host venue for senior games.
The move heaps pressure on the board following the acknowledgement that the redevelopment of MacHale Park in Castlebar had heaped a debt of €11.6m on the county, with €600,000 being written down and the remainder secured through renegotiated loans between the bank and Croke Park.
Last year the accounts showed a cost of €750,760 to fund all county teams’ activities, including the run to the 2012 All-Ireland final.
