Battle-hardened Gill ready for another scrap

Hugh Gill has a fresh scar across his hand as he sits and discusses his latest AIB Leinster Club SFC final with St Vincent’s.

Battle-hardened Gill ready for another scrap

He broke his hand in a club game earlier this year, sticking it where he shouldn’t have and the subsequent break required metal pins to be inserted.

Injuries were much of the reason why his Dublin career never took off after helping St Vincent’s to the All-Ireland Club SFC title in 2008. Though he was called into Pat Gilroy’s Dublin panel and played in the Allianz League he found himself on the treatment table too often and was soon dispatched back to focus exclusively on club duty again.

“I’ve had a few breaks, a few hamstring tears, I broke my hand, had surgery on my leg, a few different shots,” said Gill.

“I was training with Dublin and unfortunately had a bad one in 2009 or 2010 and they kept coming. I’ve never had a couple of months in the last few years where I’ve been injury-free.

“The injuries didn’t help when I was with Dublin. I was going from training session to training session and it’s very hard to enjoy football and be trying to play at a high level when you’re stuck on the physio table every day.

“My mam is a physio now so I’ll give her a shout out, she’s been great for me. I’ve been injury free for a good few months now so I’m enjoying it.”

Gill recalled his stint with Dublin under club mate and 2011 All-Ireland winning manager Gilroy.

“I was in there for a couple of years,” he said. “Unfortunately I never managed to get into the Championship team and then was just unfortunate with the few injuries, as I said. But I’m enjoying my football now.

“All that stuff regarding Dublin comes after the journey. We’re only looking towards Sunday and hopefully getting a win. If we can do that, the rest will look after itself.”
