Queally heads Déise shortlist

Peter Queally has emerged as favourite to become Waterford’s new senior hurling team manager. And Queally’s claims could be enhanced if Passage claim victory in next Sunday’s county final against eastern rivals Ballygunner.

Queally heads Déise shortlist

Passage, with Noel Connors and Eoin Kelly in their ranks, have not contested a county final since 1977. But with 2002 Munster SHC medallist Queally — who managed the county’s U21s this year — in charge, Passage beat Mount Sion to reach the Walsh Park decider.

It is understood Queally’s main rival for the county post, Derek McGrath from De La Salle, was interviewed this week by the sub-committee seeking Michael Ryan’s successor.

Stephen Frampton and James Murray are two members of that committee and both soldiered at inter-county level with Queally during this playing days.

County board chairman Tom Cunningham, vice-chairman John O’Leary, secretary Timmy O’Keeffe and treasurer Joe Cleary are also involved in the hunt.

McGrath is a strong candidate, too, having guided De La Salle to county SHC glory last year. McGrath was also responsible for back-to-back Harty Cup successes enjoyed by the De La Salle school in 2007 and ’08.

On both occasions, they went on to claim the All-Ireland crown. A county board meeting is scheduled for next Monday night, where the new manager could be ratified.

But Waterford top brass are believed to be in no hurry as they explore all options, including some from outside the county.
