Glenealy and Carnew must battle it out again

Defending senior hurling champions Glenealy drew with arch-rivals Carnew in Saturday’s dogged semi-final encounter at Aughrim (1-11 apiece).

Glenealy and Carnew must battle it out again

Leighton Glynn and his brother Enan opened the scoring for Glenealy with points in the first three minutes, but thereafter Carnew led for most of the game.

Carnew were ahead 0-7 to 0-4 at half time, three of those points from full-forward TJ Hennessy.

When the Glynn brothers narrowed the gap to a point after the restart, Hennessy struck again for a goal after good work from Robert Lambert.

Glenealy had the wind in the second half and when they drew level (1-8 apiece) after 50 minutes with a goal from Jonathan Bosco O’Neill, they looked set to push on to victory.

Glenealy’s new signing from Wexford, Stephen Nolan, started at centre-back and then switched to attack, scoring the second of their two lead points on 53 minutes (1-10 to 1-8). But Carnew showed great character and battling spirit, fighting back to send the game to a replay, the equalising point fittingly coming from evergreen Don Hyland.

The other senior hurling semi-final was a non-event, with Bray Emmets romping to a 2-17 to 1-7 win over a disappointing St. Patrick’s side.

Bray’s Mikey Lee showcased his scoring skills with 1-9 while centre-back John Henderson was man of the match.
