Culloty right man for Rebels, says Morgan
“I have heard Danny Culloty’s name mentioned and I think he would be a good choice,” said former All-Ireland winning captain and manager Morgan.
“Two years ago, with his club Newmarket — I know it was only intermediate — they lost the first two rounds of the championship and Danny was then brought in as coach and they went on and won the county.
“They have held their senior status, although they are in danger of losing it now.
“When I have been speaking to him over the last couple of years I always thought he had good ideas about football. He is a pleasant type, he would get on well with players. His man-management skill, I think, would be good.”
Morgan, who was in attendance as former Mayo star Willie Joe Padden was inducted into the DAA (Dublin Airport Authority) Kick Fada Hall of Fame, ruled himself out of a return to the job and is happy coaching UCC for the Sigerson Cup. However he admitted he would prefer a Cork man to take the job.
“John Cleary, in my opinion, it is his to refuse,” says Morgan. “I haven’t been speaking to him. I was speaking to him after he retired from the U21 job and I kind of half slagged him that the next job is the senior job. But I believe he has said no. And then you have Brian Cuthbert, his name is being mentioned. Brian coached the minors who went to the All-Ireland a couple of years ago and was a selector with Conor the last two years. He seems to be the front runner.”
