The victory and passage to the quarter-final was rarely in doubt, the only worry coming for a couple of minutes in the fourth quarter when they were pegged back to a three-point lead.
Glenville could hardly believe how tough it was for much of this contest, with Clyda powering into what proved to be an unassailable winning lead inside the opening 15 minutes, James Murphy striking three points from frees, Cian O’Sullivan adding two and Conor O’Sullivan one point to establish a six-point buffer. They never looked back although the second quarter was much more evenly contested once Glenville finally got on the board after 24 minutes.
By then, however, Clyda had moved easily into a nine-point lead and it took two points from Paudie Cahill and one from William Connolly to give Glenville hope at the break.
Yes, they looked far more diligent in the second half; John Halbert struck twice, Cahill once to a Paudie Kissane single to narrow the gap to four.
However, Noel O’Riordan’s dismissal for a second yellow card offence in 43 minutes was crucial, even if Clyda had their own problems when Chris Kenny also saw red following a second yellow five minutes later.
Glenville responded with a couple of points and were just three points down with 10 minutes to play.
It was just too big a gap to bridge though; the Mourneabbey side were quick to get back on the rails and knocked over a further four points in a five-minute spell, from Murphy (two), Cian O’Sullivan and Conor Flanagan.
The sole response from Glenville came through Connolly with a minute on the clock, scant consolation on a day when the better side won and they’ll surely look forward to a semi-final tussle against Ballingeary or Nemo Rangers.
