Cork IT turn on power to ease clear of UCC

Cork IT 0-18 UCC 0-11

At the end of the hour, and despite some errant shooting at times, they had seven points to spare and were full value for the victory.

They had three points on the board before UCC got off the mark. Philip O’Connor, Donough Leahy and Michael Vaughan pointed for CIT before Steven O’Brien kicked an excellent point for UCC.

With Rory O’Sullivan effective at centre-back for CIT they swiftly moved 0-6 to 0-2 ahead following points from Philip O’Connor and Ciarán Sheehan.

UCC stayed in touch with white flags from Peter Acheson and O’Brien but CIT, who had the benefit of the wind, regrouped to kick three unanswered points to leave six points separating the sides, 0-10 to 0-4, at the interval.

CIT had to re-jig their side after losing Rory O’Sullivan to injury on the stroke of half time, and with UCC picking off three points on the spin immediately after the resumption they appeared to be up against it.

However, they got their act together while the introduction of John Corkery also made a positive impact after he linked with Sheehan to shoot a fine point.

Cathal Vaughan angled over two brilliant frees from the right wing and one from play as CIT took control once more, 0-14 to 0-7 at the end of the third quarter.

UCC, though, fought back and a trio of points from Cox (free), Peter Crowley and O’Brien narrowed the gap to just four points.

But, CIT raised their game once again and kicked the next four points courtesy of Michael Vaughan, Cathal Vaughan and Jeremiah O’Connor (two) to place them in a commanding position (0-18 to 0-10) with five minutes left on the clock.

Even though O’Brien got through for the final point of the game for UCC, they were already making their exit from the championship.

CIT will be happy with what was, in the end, a comfortable win.
