‘Fingers crossed’ for injured Cork star O’Neill
The Ballyclough attacker went down after receiving a pass in the 16th minute, with fears he sustained a third cruciate ligament injury, after setbacks in 2008 and 2011.
“It’s disappointing for Colm,” manager Conor Counihan admitted. “We don’t know the extent of it yet, the medics won’t have a clear view until he has a scan done. We’re keeping our fingers very much crossed.”
O’Neill tweeted on Saturday night: “Thanks for all the messages. Will just have to wait and see what the scan shows up. #hopefully”, while a Cork spokesperson confirmed yesterday morning that the results of the scan would be known in the next few days.
Cork are currently without Ciarán Sheehan, who suffered a tear in the acromioclavicular (A/C) joint his shoulder in last week’s win over Tyrone, while Donncha O’Connor has an Achilles problem and was only used from the bench on Saturday. There was some good news on the injury for Cork, however, as Daniel Goulding came on as a late sub for Andrew O’Sullivan — his first competitive action of the year for the county after a knee injury — while Patrick Kelly is also due to return soon after a hip problem.
