Dual star Chin in final dash for Model cause

Lee Chin made a desperate dash back to Wexford for the Walsh Cup final following the postponement of yesterday’s Allianz League clash with Armagh.

The dual player was named on both panels before being given permission to travel with the footballers for their Division 2 tie in Armagh.

However, following a pitch inspection around three hours before throw-in at the Athletic Grounds, the game was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

It’s understood that former Wexford player Leigh O’Brien, a member of the football management team, drove Chin back to Wexford for the hurlers’ Walsh Cup final.

They arrived around 10 minutes before throw-in in Enniscorthy and Chin eventually came on as a sub, making a scoring introduction, though Wexford were beaten by Dublin.

Wexford chairman Diarmuid Devereux, lauded the dedication of Chin. He said: “It showed his commitment and dedication to the game of both hurling and football. One could only commend his effort to get back and assist the hurlers.” Devereux also confirmed his board will be seeking a re-fixture this weekend. “It’s was a costly exercise but we’ll be seeking a re-fixture for this coming weekend.”

It was one of two games in the north-east to fall foul of the poor weather. The tie between Galway and Louth, scheduled for the GAA grounds in Drogheda, was also postponed after a failed pitch inspection at 10am.

It was a blow to the visiting Wexford and Galway teams who hoped to build on the momentum of Round 1 wins.

But the development could favour Armagh who, following defeat in Round 1, may have their Crossmaglen players back for the tie against Wexford if it is held over until later in the campaign.

The only league tie that got the go ahead in the region was the Division 3 clash between Meath and Wicklow in Aughrim.
