Leacy: Winning a habit we don’t want to break

The good times have been rolling for over a decade for quite a few of Wexford’s camogie stock, But rather than all the success satisfying their appetites, star centre-back Mary Leacy says it only serves to sharpen their focus to sustain the run.

Leacy: Winning a habit we don’t want to break

“When you get into winning ways it makes you even more competitive,” she said. “You know what it feels like to win, so you strive harder for the next year, knowing you have to put in a bit more or else face the threat of other teams catching up on you.”

However, Leacy refuses to wallow in past glories, even that club breakthrough earlier this year. Instead, the three-time All Star declared: “That is history now. We want to win this year’s All-Ireland. So we cannot be looking back on last year’s championship.

“This year’s final is going to be one of the hardest and toughest games yet, and it will take all of us to play to our full potential if we are to come through with the title.”

It was Galway in the final for Wexford in the last two years. Cork offer a change of scenery this time round, but one which Mary and her colleagues have sufficient experience of to make them extremely wary.

“Cork are an extremely good team, and they have some tremendous individual,” Leacy added. “So we just have keep our heads down and make sure that we are really ready for this game, because there will be nothing easy on Sunday.”

Although young enough to potentially still have many more September Sundays ahead of her in Croker, it is a sign of Leacy’s appreciation of opportunities when she sums up how much Wexford covet this particular opportunity.

“This could be the last time we get back to Croke Park… who knows? So we will be putting our absolute all into this game.”
