Rynagh’s shock for champions Coolderry

There will new hurling champions in Offaly after All-Ireland club finalists Coolderry were comprehensively brushed aside by impressive St Rynagh’s in the quarter-final yesterday.

Rynagh’s shock for champions Coolderry

The Dinny Cahill managed St Rynagh’s, who last savoured championship glory in 1993, hurled with fierce intensity and purpose as they eclipsed Ken Hogan’s men by 0-15 to 1-7. It took Coolderry, the champions of the past two years, 53 minutes to get their first point from play courtesy of their only scorer, Brian Carroll, who nicked a goal in the 59th minute.

Ger Scales (0-4), Gary Conneely and Stephen Quirke, who scored 0-3 apiece, were to the fore as the Rynagh’s attack punched holes in a porous Coolderry defence. Indeed but for Stephen Corcoran’s top class 43rd minute diving save to deny Ciaran Flannery, St Rynagh’s, who had solid defensive displays from Pat Camon, Stephen Wynne, Simon Óg Lyons and Conor Hernon, would have won more comfortably.
