Donegal close to fulfilling Old Moore’s Almanac prediction

Donegal are just 70 minutes away from becoming the first team to win an All-Ireland SFC title with seven victories from as many games.

In what would arguably be the most emphatic of Championship crowns, Jim McGuinness’ side would complete a handsome unbeaten record were they to beat Dublin or Mayo next month.

Last year, Donegal became only the second team in the history of the Ulster SFC to win the Anglo-Celt Cup from the preliminary round, after Armagh in 2003.

They repeated that feat this season and have since beaten recent All-Ireland champions Kerry and Cork to reach their first All-Ireland final in 20 years.

Some Donegal supporters may believe there is some fateful about this season and their 1992 All-Ireland glory, with Ireland once again winning a boxing gold medal in the Olympics.

Earlier this year, Old Moore’s Almanac predicted Donegal would win the All-Ireland. However, it also forecasted Tipperary picking up the Liam MacCarthy Cup next month.

However, the annual publication has had a habit of getting the identity of one of the senior champions right in recent years.

Last year, it correctly foresaw Kilkenny as victors although it stated Cork — not Dublin — would lift the Sam Maguire cup.

The previous season, it got Cork spot-on in football but incorrectly opted for Kilkenny over hurling winners Tipperary.

Incidentally, this year marks only the second time in the history of the GAA that a Munster county has not been represented in either of the All-Ireland senior finals.

The only other occasion came in 1998 Offaly and Kilkenny faced each other in hurling and Galway beat Kildare in football.
