Hawk-Eye live once accuracy hits 100%

The GAA are prepared to go live with Hawk-Eye before the end of the championship, if it’s 100% accurate, according to association president Liam O’Neill.

Hawk-Eye live once accuracy hits 100%

On Saturday, it was revealed the score detection technology’s reliability readings are currently working at 98% in testing and the company are confident it will be ready shortly.

In 2011, Hawk-Eye was granted a two-year trial basis for championship games at Croke Park starting this season. However, its unveiling has been delayed due to problems encountered with wobbling posts, strong sunlight and shots hit higher than eight metres above the top of the posts.

Yesterday’s All-Ireland senior and minor hurling semi-finals were another opportunity to assess the system.

O’Neill said he will give the green light to the ball-tracking technology as soon as it has demonstrated it is completely accurate.

“Hawk-Eye will have proved or failed to prove its worth before the end of the season. It’s up to the system, it’s not about us.

“At the moment, they say it’s in the high 90s in terms of accuracy — we want 100%.

“If they reach 100% and prove to us that decisions can be conveyed to match officials in such time as not to hold up the process of the game we will certainly go with it.

“I don’t mind waiting until next year.

“However, I don’t want to rule it out prematurely if it’s of benefit to us because I would accept whatever value technology could add to our decision-making to make our games better.”
