Drake turns tide as Carrigaline march into semi-final

Carrigaline booked their place in the Cork Premier IFC semi-final after a late rally saw them edge past Nemo Rangers in awful conditions in Shanbally last night.

Two first-half Seán O’Brien goals gave Nemo a five-point buffer at the change of ends but after a lacklustre performance, Carrigaline finally found their rhythm in the closing 10 minutes, hitting 1-5 without reply to run out winners.

Carrigaline set the pace early on with their half-forward line in particular catching the eye. Wing forward Niall Coakley opened the scoring on two minutes and their advantage was doubled two minutes later when David Drake pointed from a free.

Conor O’Donovan pulled one back for Nemo only for Peter Murphy to restore the two point lead with a fantastic score.

But Nemo soon took control and stopped the flow of ball to Carrig’s dangerous attackers. Jerry Kerins and O’Donovan passed up goal chances before Seán O’Brien smashed in his first on 24 minutes.

A Coakley free looked to send Carrig’ into the break just two behind but on the stroke of half-time O’Brien registered his second goal, fisting in a loose ball which broke in the Carrig goalmouth to leave Rangers 2-3 to 0-4 ahead at half-time.

Early second-half points from Coakley and Drake were cancelled out by efforts from Alan Morgan and Kerins.

With wet conditions ensuring a low scoring game, it was hard to see how Carrigaline could forge a way back into the contest as Nemo seemed to have a reply for every point Carrigaline point.

The game’s crucial score came in the 53rd minute when Drake caught a long Barry O’Keeffe delivery and rattled the Rangers’ net to make it 2-6 to 1-7.

Another major influence on the game was the introduction of Tony Murphy to the Carrigaline team. He sent over two magnificent late points while Drake also claimed a brace to complete Carrig’s late show.
