Evans shows interest in Meath job

John Evans has declared an interest in the Meath football manager vacancy.

The former Tipperary boss was brought in by Seamus McEnaney in a bid to freshen up the backroom team ahead of this year’s Leinster SFC and he liked what he saw. However he could face stiff opposition from fellow selector Graham Geraghty who also indicated he would like the role and is expected to be nominated.

“Yes I would be interested, you’re always interested in something like that,” the Kerry native told The Meath Chronicle.

“I was happy working with the players and I was happy with the response they gave in such a short space of time. You would want to be a fool to say you wouldn’t want to work with them.

“I really enjoyed my sojourn to Meath. They were at such a low ebb in fairness when I went up there and I applied a new style, implemented a game-plan they liked.

“What I was really, really delighted with was the response of the players, they were wonderful, the overall atmosphere changed and they thrived on that.”

Meanwhile, Carlow County Board has bowed to its players demands by working on getting managers of their football and hurling teams in place before the summer is over.

Luke Dempsey and Kevin Ryan stepped down from their roles with the senior footballers and hurlers respectively after this year’s campaigns and while the board admit carrying out interviews for their replacements, they will not divulge the names of the possible replacements.

The interview procedure began late last week and the county board are planning to continue with more interviews this week. However secretary Ger Lennon cautioned it will take time.

“It is a slow process,” he said. “Having said that, we would hope to be able to make an announcement in two to three weeks’ time.”

It is believed there are at least three to four applications for each position with all coming from outside the county. The county secretary would not divulge who the candidates are.

“Don’t mind rumours. We have told nobody about the identity of the people we have interviewed and are not going to either,” stated Lennon.
