Milltown/Castlemaine make the step-up in style

Milltown/Castlemaine 0-11 East Kerry0-10

The winners were much more economical in turning possession into scores while East Kerry, minus county junior star Niall O’Mahony, will have few fond memories when reviewing the DVD, especially in terms of an inability to convert chance after chance.

Milltown/Castlemaine were quickly out of the blocks and Cathal Moriarty had their first score with seconds of the throw-in. And though Derry Ahern levelled matters with a tidy point, the club side forged ahead with scores from Donal Kelliher and a successful Moriarty free.

East Kerry dominated the first-half proceedings. Andrew Garnett had an inspired hour at midfield, claiming numerous clean high catches; their defence, with Eoin Cronin and Jack Sherwood having stand-out games, had Milltown Castlemaine’s attack well marshalled, and Michael O’Donoghue and Glenflesk attacker Jeff O’Donoghue garnered a fair share of possession in attack.

But time and again poor finishing made that hard work count for nought. Milltown/Castlemaine were far more clinical in front of goal, and not even the loss of talisman Mike Burke after two minutes dampened their spirit.

Scores from Cathal Moriarty (2), Donal Kelliher (2), Shane Murphy (2), John O’Connor kept their noses ahead at the break, 0-7 to 0-5.

Milltown/Castlemaine spread of scorers included Cathal Moriarty, Shane Murphy, Donal Kelliher and Colm Kerins with two points each, while John O’Connor, Derek Twiss and Paul Carroll contributed one each.

East Kerry’s final tally of 0-10 was made up of five Jeff O’Donoghue points, three from Michael O’Donoghue and Derry Ahern, while centre back Jack Sherwood popped up with a monster effort.
