Croker residents braced for battle
The Croke Park Streets Community Association (CPSCA) are demonstrating against Croke Park. who have taken legal action against a number of residents over the proposed handball centre.
At the entrance to the hotel, they had affixed banners reading “Requiem in Pact” and “The New Croke Park Agreement”.
Last year in the Mullingar Park Hotel, the same group succeeded in disrupting Congress during the Saturday session.
Before Christmas, a number of residents have received civil bills from Croke Park indicating the GAA’s intention to take them to court as they refuse to vacate the existing handball centre on St Joseph’s Avenue.
In a statement, they claimed GAA president Christy Cooney had done little to interact with the local Croke Park community. “Since Christy Cooney became President, Croke Park’s relationship with its community has hit new lows.
“The GAA President is an elected honorary office yet Mr Cooney drew a massive six-figure salary as president... this in our opinion was totally inappropriate. He retires today (sic) and we will be glad to see the back of him.” They added: “We have served our community as GAA volunteers in our centre for over 40 years and for many years before.”
The CPSCA also warned they are prepared to fight dirty against the GAA in court. “Too long as dedicated GAA people we kept our mouths shut and fought our corner quietly... we wonder where did we hear echoes of that before?”
