Leinster in O’Byrne Cup conundrum

The Leinster Council are struggling to find a date to re-fix the Bord na Mona O’Byrne Cup final, a game potentially worth €40,000 to the province’s injured players fund.

Leinster in O’Byrne Cup conundrum

The decider between Kildare and DCU was called off yesterday due to a waterlogged pitch in Newbridge’s St Conleth’s Park.

The Leinster Council asked Kildare to look at rearranging the game for this evening in either Portlaoise or Parnell Park (Newbridge doesn’t have floodlights).

However, Kildare informed the council yesterday they are unable to play tonight. Leinster Council chairman Martin Skelly confirmed their Competitions Control Committee meet today to discuss the issue. However, with Kildare beginning their Allianz Division 2 campaign against Tyrone on Saturday and DCU facing Cork IT in a Sigerson Cup opener the following Tuesday, Skelly admits they have a job on their hands. He said: “Our competitions control committee will have an emergency meeting to weigh up the options. Kildare’s league and DCU’s Sigerson Cup commitments make the choices available extremely limited. The bottom line is we’ll meet and discuss it.”

Proceeds from all Leinster’s O’Byrne and Walsh pre-season competitions go to the province’s injured players fund.
