Incident latest disciplinary controversy to hit Tyrone

In November, the Tyrone County Board’s Central Competition Committee (CCC) dished out heavy punishments to Carrickmore and Dromore for the brawl which marred their Division One league final. Suspensions totalling 452 weeks were handed out to players and spectators involved in fighting, along with fines and restrictions on the playing activities of both clubs for next season.

Four people from each club involved in the incidents were banned from the GAA for a year, while lengthy suspensions were also handed down to three Carrickmore players.

Carrickmore goalkeeper Plunkett McCallan, defender Colm McGurk and substitute Gabriel McCallan were handed suspensions totalling 72 weeks. Back in June, two men were banned for life from ladies football following a probe into serious incidents which marred the county senior ladies football final between St Macartan’s and Carrickmore.

Referee Simon Brady and Tyrone chairman Martin Conway were both knocked unconscious after being assaulted following the game.

Brady was struck after St Macartan’s beat Carrickmore (1-8 to 2-4) with a dramatic late goal in the decider at Beragh on Friday night before an official from the ladies’ board was then also knocked out after being struck while trying to intervene. Both men were stretchered off the field.

And last April, double All-Ireland senior winner Joe McMahon was left with a broken jaw after an off-the-ball incident in a league game with his club Omagh St Enda’s.

Inter-county star McMahon sustained the injury midway through the first-half of the game in Moortown in an incident that was not seen by officials.

He was forced to undergo surgery at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where it was confirmed he had broken his jaw in two places and also had a number of his teeth knocked out.
