Callanan eyeing quick return
“The recovery’s going pretty well,” said Callanan yesterday.
“I had the operation Monday week and I’m back in Dublin today to have it looked at, so hopefully the news will be good. I’m hoping to do a bit more with it, in terms of exercise and putting weight on it, in the next couple of weeks.”
Though Callanan’s inter-county year ended in disappointment last September with Tipperary’s defeat to Kilkenny, his club season had a happier end as he captained Drom & Inch to their first county title.
“That was definitely the highlight, you had scenes after that game that you’ll never see again,” he recalls.
“We’d lost so much in the previous few years that it was relief, as much as anything else, when we won the title.”
Callanan also welcomed the appointment of Paul Curran and Padraic Maher as captain and vice-captain for the season ahead.
“The two boys will do a great job, they’re great motivators and two lads that everybody in the dressing room look up to anyway. Their attitude and their preparation on and off the field is top class and definitely there’s exciting times ahead for Tipp.”
Callanan was speaking ahead of tonight’s Tipperary Supporters Club membership launch in Horse and Jockey (8pm), where management and members of the senior county teams will be in attendance.
“The supporters club is vital for us,” said Callanan. “They facilitate us hugely when it comes to training camps or weekends away, which all counties are doing these days and which you need to match if you’re going to compete at the highest level. Anything we look for, they’re able to help us out with, which obviously is a huge help as we prepare.
“Times are rough for everyone at present but I’d urge everyone to row in behind the supporters club because they do fantastic work, and they help Tipperary teams to realise their potential.”
