Horan: Don’t fix what isn’t broken

MAYO boss James Horan has voiced his opposition to any proposals to make wholesale changes to the current structure of the All-Ireland SFC.

“A Connacht medal is very special to players and it’s always nice to win your provincial championship,” he said.

“The Connacht final is a big day and we found out a lot about ourselves in last year’s final against Roscommon. There’s a great tradition around the Connacht championship and it has been very good to us in Mayo over the years. I’m in favour of keeping the current system. It may need a bit of tweaking but that’s easily done.”

Horan appreciates the advantages of a four eight-team conference system but doesn’t believe they outweigh those of the current structure.

“The new system would probably be more consistent and competitive. There would be more games and it’d be easier to plan for the entire season.

“It would also end the problems of some losing provincial finalists having to play six or seven days after being beaten in their own province, but I don’t think it’d be for me.”
