Glenbeigh/Glencar must wait for final rivals
While the twin terrors of Kerry footballer Darran O’Sullivan and Gavin O’Grady fired Glenbeigh/Glencar past Beaufort, winning 0-9 to 0-6 in the divisional semi-final in Glenbeigh, the other last four tussle in Cromane yesterday between Laune Rangers and Cromane was abandoned with just five minutes left after Cromane corner-back John O’Sullivan suffered a serious leg injury.
The game was tied at 0-6 apiece and both teams were down to 14 players — after Laune Rangers’ John Sheehan and Cromane’s David Moroney were both red-carded in the second-half — when yesterday’s semi-final was called off.
Laune Rangers had battled back from a 0-4 to 0-2 half-time deficit, thanks to 0-4 from former Kingdom star Mike Frank Russell. Indeed, Russell scored all but one of Rangers’ points — Pa Joy grabbed a first-half effort — including a first-half point that got the Killorglin side off the mark after Cromane, thanks to the promptings of returning Kerry senior Sean O’Sullivan, had raced into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead.
In the second-half, three Russell frees edged Rangers ahead (0-5 to 0-3) only for Cromane to level, before both sides saw players sent off. Cromane’s Liam Walsh pushed his side ahead once more but Russell, again, levelled the game, before it was abandoned due to O’Sullivan’s leg injury.
Later yesterday, there was no stopping Glenbeigh/Glencar in the second-half of their semi-final win over Beaufort as they turned a 0-5 to 0-4 deficit into a three-point victory. With Darran O’Sullivan busy around midfield, Gavin O’Grady operating as both a creator and scorer, and Jason McKenna, who scored 0-2 in the second-half, impressing, this trio turned on the style when it mattered.
While Beaufort’s Kevin O’Brien kept the home side in touch, Glenbeigh/Glencar pulled away in the final 10 minutes, rattling off the last three scores to guarantee their place in the Mid Kerry final in early January.
