Cats get cream as board to post €200,000 profit

At tonight’s county board annual convention in the O’Loughlin Gaels Centre, delegates will be informed that the board are bucking the trend of economic doom and gloom troubling many of their counterparts.

County board treasurer Barry Hickey admitted: “We enjoyed a few lucky breaks, but we also keep a close eye on things.”

One of those breaks was a replay of the county senior hurling final between St Stephen’s and Ballyhale Shamrocks which produced returns in excess of €80,000.

An appearance in the Allianz Hurling League final against Dublin earned a bonus of €40,000.

The county made an early exit from the minor and U21 hurling championships, which lightened the load on resources, but against that, recent developments at Nowlan Park meant the board was committed to repayments of €10,000 per month for the first time this year.

Delegates will also be asked to vote on an emergency motion asking that the term of the county board treasurer, who has served the stipulated five years, be extended. The only person nominated for the job is Mr Hickey, who has served during the past five years when Kilkenny turned a cumulative profit close to €1m.
