Challenge to Holleranin Galway
John Joe Holleran is hoping to remain as chairman of Galway football board for a fifth and final year, but he is to be challenged next week for the post.
The current vice-chairman, Michael Ruane from Abbeyknockmoy, has been nominated for the position ahead of Thursday’s annual convention.
Holleran is confident he has sufficient support to be re-elected to the position, but is refusing to go cap-in-hand in search for votes.
“One thing that is for sure, I will not canvas for one vote from people involved in Galway football.
“If there comes a time that I have to canvas one vote to win then it is time for me to sit back and start enjoying my memories from the association,” said the Clonbur man who said he was in his 41st year of involvement with Galway football.
Alan Mulholland, who led the Tribesmen to the All-Ireland U-21 title in April, has been appointed senior boss for the next three seasons after Tomas Ó Flathárta and Joe Kernan only served a year each after taking over from Liam Sammon.
