Limerick appoint Lacey as senior football coach

FORMER Kildare and Tipperary footballer Brian Lacey is the new coach and selector of the Limerick senior footballers.

Limerick appoint Lacey as senior football coach

Lacey fills a vacancy created by the appointment of Ephie Fitzgerald as manager of the Cork minors.

An All Star in 1998, when he shone as a tight-marking and abrasive corner-back in Kildare’s march to the All-Ireland final, Lacey has been involved in the club scene in recent years with Rathangan and Nurney.

While looking for a replacement for Fitzgerald, Limerick manager, Maurice Horan heard plenty of positives about Lacey’s methods, as well as his character. Allied with the 37-year-old’s knowledge of Munster football, Horan maintains he was a perfect fit.

“I didn’t know Brian personally but we looked at the type of person we wanted,” Horan explained yesterday. “In his time as a player he would have worked very hard on his game. He played most of his football with Kildare but as a Tipperary man originally, he’d know the scene in Munster.

“We would have done some research into him and found out that he was very thorough in his own preparation. He’s done some work with different teams and the reports there are all good as well. He’s a steely guy, a very well-spoken character and very detailed in what he does, so we’re happy to have him on board.”

Meanwhile, Horan is happy that Limerick possess a good balance of players and will continue to integrate some of the younger brigade.

“There is a good pool of talented young players around the place so we want to get them used to the inter-county set-up”
