Club form key for Seán Óg
Ó hAilpín, who was omitted from former manager Denis Walsh’s plans this season, met with Barry-Murphy and was informed that he was part of the new management’s plans for the coming season.
“Through the media, we had learned that he was available and interested to play for Cork next year,” revealed Cork selector Kieran Kingston last night.
“Anybody that played club hurling this year, we looked at and it was felt that Sean Óg had been doing well for Na Piarsaigh. We had a few meetings and his name came up. The consensus was that he had something to offer. Age doesn’t matter to an extent. Jimmy spoke to him on Friday and Sean Óg, who is a very passionate hurling man, was glad to come back.”
Kingston also paid tribute to Jerry O’Connor and Kieran ‘Fraggy’ Murphy who have opted out of the squad due to retirement and work commitments respectively. “Jerry has retired but he made a phenomenal contribution to Cork hurling. He was a very unassuming guy but he made an incredible contribution to Cork hurling with his style of play. . Kieran is working out of the county and felt he couldn’t give the commitment but has done a lot for hurling in the county.”
