Davy ponders Déise future
The Clare native is in demand in his own county but met with Déise officials last weekend to sound out the possibility of remaining on for at least another season.
Fitzgerald was looking for reassurances before putting his name forward for another term at the September 13 board meeting.
However, speculation has led to the Clare Champion claiming Fitzgerald will depart from Waterford over the All-Ireland final weekend and is already the front runner for the vacant Clare job.
The newspaper also claimed Galway have made contact with Fitzgerald about taking over their senior manager’s position.
But there is already conjecture about Fitzgerald’s role in Waterford being available. After leading Waterford to a fourth All-Ireland semi-final and third Munster final this year, Fitzgerald enjoys the backing of the panel.
Captain Stephen Molumphy and John Mullane have recently called for the Sixmilebridge man to remain in the job although Mullane pointed out he was a wanted man in Clare.
Following his transformation of the team following the 2008 Munster semi-final defeat, Fitzgerald understandably holds a deep loyalty to the team, the majority of which he has groomed for senior hurling.
Kilkenny and Tipperary remain the only two teams that have beaten Waterford under Fitzgerald’s tutelage.
However, there is a belief among some officials that he has brought them as far as he can.
