Offensive text to Fitzgerald was not sent by Déise club

AN offensive mobile phone text message received by Waterford hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald after his side’s All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Galway was not sent to him by any club unit according to county board chiefs.

Offensive text to Fitzgerald was not sent by Déise club

Fitzgerald was reportedly extremely upset at the nature of the message, and in an subsequent interview made reference to receiving the text “from a city based football club’’.

That comment drew an immediate response from the St Saviours club who felt they were being targeted by the manager. Club officials made known their anger to the board chiefs who launched an investigation into the matter.

Yesterday the board issued a statement noting that: “our investigation has now traced the text to the mobile phone of an individual in West Waterford. We are satisfied that it did not emanate from any GAA club in either the city or county and that it was solely the action of an individual acting on his own behalf’’.

Meanwhile speculation continues to surround the future of Fitzgerald whose managerial term ended with defeat to Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final.

The Clare native is remaining tightlipped on his plans but the matter is set to be discussed at a county board meeting on September 12.
