O’Sullivan’s goal one of the greats, reckons legend Darby

DARRAN O’SULLIVAN’S wonder goal against Limerick in last Sunday’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final is one of the greatest goals ever scored in Croke Park, according to the man who scored the most famous football goal in GAA history, Seamus Darby.

O’Sullivan’s goal one of the greats, reckons legend Darby

The legendary Offaly footballer, who shot to legendary status when he scored the last-gasp goal in the 1982 All-Ireland SFC final that denied Kerry the illustrious five in a row, knows what it’s like to be remembered for scoring a much celebrated goal. And Darby was quick to laud O’Sullivan’s unconventional and cheeky back flick goal that grabbed the headlines in Kerry’s All-Ireland quarter-final win over Limerick in Croke Park.

“It was a great goal. He knew what he was doing. He tricked all the Limerick backs with just one flick of the ball. It’s certainly one of the great goals scored in Croke Park,” Darby said. “It’s great that it worked out for him because it’s one of those goals that will be remembered for a long time.

“It’s not what you would call a normal corner forward’s goal. Corner forwards of the older style just wouldn’t have thought of doing what Darran did,” Darby said.

O’Sullivan is wasting little time as he battles to be fit for the All-Ireland SFC semi-final against Mayo on August 21. O’Sullivan spent yesterday in a cryotherapy chamber in Clare bidding to speed up the recovery on a leg muscle injury which forced his withdrawal in Sunday’s quarter-final victory.

He tweeted: “Up in ennis in Cryo chamber... I’m perished!!!”
