The home side got off to a great start and with John Sheridan causing problems at centre-forward, they led by 0-8 points to 0-4 at the break.

Ger Smyth instigated the fightback with a couple of points and when Diarmuid O’Sullivan pounced for a crucial goal, Louth assumed the lead and were never led thereafter.

Donegal were too good for their northern rivals Monaghan at Clones, winning 3-12 to 1-14.

In the final game, Roscommon had a comfortable 1-19 to 1-10 win over neighbours Sligo at Athleague.

John Coyne was the Rossies’ hero with a goal and five points while for Sligo, Keith Raymond (0-4), Declan Loughnane (0-3) and goalkeeper Gary Cadden impressed.

In Division Four, Longford notched their first league win of the campaign when they had four points to spare over Leitrim at Carrick-on-Shannon, winning on a scoreline of 2-15 to 3-8.

Leitrim led 2-6 to 1-6 at half-time after goals by Padraig McWeeney and Shane Moran but a sterling second-half display by Longford swung matters around in their favour.

Morgan Quinn did get a third Leitrim goal but Longford came back and goals from Dave McGovern and Morgan Lamb made the game safe.

South Down kept up their good form with a resounding 4-13 to 2-11 win over Fermanagh at Brewster Park.

Eoin Mcguinness opened the South Down goalscoring account after five minutes and they stretched that to 3-8 to 0-6 by the break when Liam Morgan goaled twice in quick succession.

They added another after the break but Fermanagh refused to give in and were rewarded by two goals from the impressive Mark Slevin.

In the final game, Tyrone had an emphatic 4-23 to 1-6 mauling of Cavan at Breffni Park.
