O’Neill set to be new president

LIAM O’NEILL is set to become the next GAA President as his only remaining rival Sheamus Howlin will later today announce he is withdrawing from the contest.

Outgoing Leinster chairman Howlin will endorse O’Neill’s candidacy for the top position at the provincial convention in Longford this afternoon.

O’Neill’s name will be the only one to go forward to Congress on Friday, April 15, following the decision by Con Hogan earlier this month, Tom Daly on Thursday and now Howlin to pull out of the race.

In becoming the 37th Uachtarán of the GAA, the Laois man will follow in the footsteps of Bob O’Keeffe who also represented the county in the organisation’s highest office from 1935 to 1938.
