Griffin targeting club final return

DUBLIN manager Pat Gilroy believes last year’s captain Paul Griffin will return before the end of the Allianz Football League and, potentially, for an AIB All-Ireland Club final with Kilmacud Crokes.

Griffin hasn’t played since rupturing cruciate knee ligaments almost 12 months ago in the League against Monaghan.

Crokes manager Paddy Carr ruled the experienced defender out of Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final against Crossmaglen, stating that the recovery had been slower than expected. But Gilroy revealed the player took part in a challenge game for Crokes on Monday night and came through unscathed.

“He played a little bit of football last Saturday with Kilmacud in training and he actually played a game last night (Monday),” said Gilroy. “He was flying, absolutely flying. I suppose he needs four to six weeks to get his fitness levels up. But he worked very hard in getting the knee right. It was great to see him get through it. He took a few knocks and he wasn’t in any way holding back so it was very positive.

“I think he will (play in the League). If Kilmacud are successful this weekend I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in contention for the club final.”

Gilroy confirmed that Michael Darragh Macauley will be available for Dublin’s Allianz League Round 3 clash with Kerry on Saturday night.

The All-Star nominated midfielder underwent a successful procedure on Monday to remove a piece of food which was lodged in his throat and ruled him out of last weekend’s win over Cork. Dublin have strong form to call upon ahead of the Kerry game after morale boosting wins over Armagh, and defending champions Cork.

Gilroy, speaking at the launch of ‘UCD and the Sigerson’, a commemorative book that details UCD’s involvement in university football, played down talk of a first League title since 1993.

“I think we’re just trying to go out and win every match we play in,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kildare defender Peter Kelly hopes to take some part in the Championship despite rupturing his cruciate last month.

“I got the operation two weeks ago so it is all uphill from here I suppose,” said Kelly.
