Moorefield likely to forfeit home advantage

MOOREFIELD return to the AIB Leinster Club Championship on Sunday for the first time in three years but the repercussions of their last appearance at this level may result in them forfeiting home advantage.

Moorefield likely to forfeit home advantage

The Kildare champions, who defeated town rivals Sarsfields in a dramatic county final last Sunday to set up a tie with Portlaoise, were handed a two-match ban on home games by the Leinster Council in 2007.

This disciplinary measure was taken after the Moores’ replayed quarter-final with Longford champions Dromard ended in an ugly brawl involving players and substitutes from both teams.

The first game of that ban was the resulting semi-final, which was moved to Cusack Park in Mullingar and saw Westmeath kingpins Tyrellspass emerge victorious.

While there is uncertainty as to whether a neutral venue should be found in the event of a team being banned from playing at home, that precedent would suggest that Laois champions, Portlaoise will get to play at O’Moore Park.

A Leinster Council spokesman said a venue would be confirmed this evening.
