Committee to choose new Limerick boss
McCarthy’s two-year term officially ended with last Saturday’s All-Ireland qualifier defeat against Offaly but the door remains open for the Cork native to reapply for the post.
At last night’s county board meeting, held in Claughaun, former Limerick playing stars Paudie Fitzmaurice and Damien Quigley were entrusted with the task of finding the new man, along with Dairygold chief Jim Woulfe.
Fitzmaurice, from the Killeedy club, won an All-Ireland senior hurling medal with Limerick in 1973 and captained the 1981 Munster championship-winning team.
A brother of another former Limerick hurler, Canon Willie Fitzmaurice, Paudie won an All-Star award in 1984 and also had a brief stint as Sligo hurling manager in 2003.
Quigley, from the Na Piarsaigh club, won an All-Star award in 1994 and scored a memorable goal in the All-Ireland final of that year, against Offaly.
Woulfe, a member of the St Kieran’s club, is the chief executive of the giant Dairygold Co-operative Society.
Woulfe, a native of Ardagh in Co Limerick, is renowned as a man with a sharp business and performance focus.
