Banner call on trio of debutants
Cratloe’s Barry Duggan is named at full-back, Clondegad player Brian Carrig will start at left corner-back and Diarmuid Daly from Corofin is selected at left corner-forward.
McDermott has picked three of the Kilmurry-Ibrickane side that reached the All-Ireland club SFC decider in March, with Martin McMahon and Declan Callinan filling the wing-back positions and Peter O’Dwyer starting at centre-forward. Three other Kilmurry-Ibrickane players, Darren and Shane Hickey, and Enda Coughlan are all included amongst the replacements. Injuries rule Graham Kelly and Laurence Healy out of the equation, while another injury doubt Barry Toner has to be content with a place on the bench.
Laois manager Niall Rigney has made two changes for Saturday’s Leinster SHC tie in Portlaoise against Carlow from the team that defeated Carlow in their NHL Division 2 tie recently in mid-April.
Captain Brian Campion comes into the team at right half-back and Shane Dollard has shaken off injury to play at right half-forward, with Darren Maher and Brian Stapleton the two players to make way. Pat Carroll keeps his place in goal instead Eoin Reilly, who was first choice for the majority of the league, while dual player Cahir Healy will start at full-back.
Meanwhile, two Cork defenders who featured during their NFL Division 1-winning campaign will not be available to challenge for places in the squad that will face Kerry in the Munster SFC semi-final in Killarney on June 6.
Ballincollig’s Noel Galvin, an All-Ireland U21 winner at corner-back last year, has travelled to the US for the summer. Macroom’s Sean Kiely broke his cheekbone in three places in a club game last weekend and is set to undergo surgery next Friday, facing a spell of six to eight weeks on the sidelines.
