Willie Minchin is understood to have had his arm broken in two places by a nightclub bouncer who is now believed to be at the centre of a criminal investigation for his actions.

Another Carlow footballer, who came to the Old Leighlin club man’s aid was questioned by British police.

The Carlow County Board last night issued a statement on the matter and insisted that none of their “players or officials” are subject to a police investigation which has been launched into the incident.

“Carlow County Board can confirm an incident occurred during the county’s trip for a NFL Division Four game in London at the weekend,” an official said last night.

“Following a sanctioned night out, a player was injured. After remonstrations by team colleagues on behalf of the player, another player was questioned.

“The matter was reported to the local police station by the Carlow team management and an investigation has been initiated.

“No Carlow players or officials are subject to that investigation.”

Meanwhile midfielder Thomas Walsh has sensationally returned to the Carlow senior football panel, three years after transferring from his native county to Wicklow in controversial fashion.

The big centrefielder was present at training last night.

The shock move would set up a dramatic Leinster SFC first round tie on May 16 in Portlaoise where Walsh would line out for Carlow against his former side Wicklow.

It is understood that Walsh has been in regular contact with Carlow boss Luke Dempsey in recent weeks and intimated last week that he wished to return to the Barrowside fold.

Walsh’s availability creates the prospect of pairing him at midfield with former Sydney Swans player Brendan Murphy, who has impressed hugely since his return from Australia at the end of last season.
