Limerick’s Flynn set for swift return

LIMERICK goalkeeper Tadhg Flynn is to make a speedy recovery from the neck injury sustained in Sunday’s NHL defeat to Waterford at Fraher Field, Dungarvan.

Limerick’s Flynn set for swift return

The stricken goalkeeper was immobilised and placed on a spinal board following an accidental collision with Waterford corner-forward Eoin McGrath midway through the first half. He was removed from the ground by ambulance to hospital but was released later that night and travelled home with the team.

Though he is expected to miss Sunday’s clash with Tipperary, Flynn should be fit to resume hurling quickly. A spokesman for Flynn’s club Ahane, has backed him to make a swift return to county action.

“Whatever way he fell, he was a small bit concussed, but he was fine again last night – our own senior hurling manager spoke to him and confirmed that.

“He’ll probably miss the next match, but that will be a call by the Limerick medical team.

“He was taken to hospital but it was purely as a precautionary measure. The paramedics at the game weren’t sure whether or not there was a problem and in that situation you don’t take any chances, so he was immobilised and taken to hospital. He is okay now and will be fine in a few days.”

In a situation dogged by controversy, Flynn is one of the many new faces in a Limerick panel drawn up by the management team led by Justin McCarthy, after 12 were cut from the 2009 panel, and 13 more walked out in protest. Along with three or four more of the newcomers, he has grabbed his opportunity and impressed.

“He came to us from Causeway, in Kerry, that was his home club,” added the spokesperson.

“He is a top-class goalkeeper, was first-choice in Kerry. He came to us in 2007 and his ambition even then was to get on the Limerick team, but he was unfortunate in that Brian Murray (the incumbent, 2007 All-Star) was on top of his game at that time.”
