Death of legendary Cork star Buckley

THE death has taken place of Glen Rovers and Cork great, Din Joe Buckley, the last surviving member of Cork’s four-in-a-row team of the forties.

In his 90th year, he was the best known of three brothers who represented both Glen Rovers and St Nicholas as well as Cork with distinction. Din Joe actually won five medals – picking up his fifth in 1946 after having played in all of the four winning teams between 1941 and ‘44. He also played in the losing final of 1947.

His brother Connie was the winning captain in 1941 (following which he went to England to work) and the third brother, Jack, won a medal the following year.
