Swine flu fear sees Down’s clash with Dubs postponed

GAA CHIEFS have postponed Saturday’s All-Ireland MFC quarter-final between Down and Dublin due to potential swine flu fears.

Down chiefs requested that the game be called off as the majority of the panel are suffering from a serious viral infection. The Central Competitions Control Committee said ‘unique circumstances’ including concerns over ‘the swine flu pandemic’ were taken into account before they reached the unusual decision to defer a championship game.

A GAA spokesperson said: “Having taken advice from relevant medical personnel, and taking into consideration the sheer number of players involved, the CCCC felt that the granting of a postponement in the unique circumstances was the only logical course of action.”
