Young setback for Kingdom

KERRY’S injury concerns are in danger of becoming a full blown crisis after confirmation last night that former young player of the year Killian Young is likely to miss the Kingdom’s opening Munster SFC clash with either Cork or Waterford on June 7th.

Young setback for Kingdom

A scan yesterday confirmed Young’s worst fears – that he had damaged the AC joint in his shoulder last weekend in a Co League game for Renard.

The injury will rule him out for three weeks, meaning he would only be returning to training the week of the June 7th clash, most likely against provincial champions Cork.

And after the Kieran Donaghy injury blow earlier this week, coach Jack O’Connor’s problems multiplied again last night after midfielder Anthony Maher damaged ankle ligaments in training.

The Duagh man has made a major impression since joining the panel, and started the National League final against Derry at midfield.

With Maher and Seamus Scanlon both doubtful for June 7th, and Donaghy out long term, Kerry’s midfield options are dwindling by the week.

Paul Galvin (groin), Tommy Walsh (hamstring), Tadhg Kennelly (hand) and Eoin Brosnan (hamstring) are also unavailable at present to O’Connor, who takes his side to Grangemockler in Tipperary on Sunday for a challenge game with Dublin.

Meanwhile Denis Glennon bagged five points as the Tyrrellspass clubman made a return to action for Westmeath who were beaten 0-19 to 0-17 in a challenge match against mayo at St Loman’s Mullingar last night.

Glennon was introduced as a second half substitute for Tomas O’Flatharta’s charges as they overcame a five-point half-time deficit, but were unlucky not to claim victory as a Barry Kelly injury-time point confirmed a Mayo win.

Meanwhile Tyrone manager Mickey Harte is confident a dislocated finger will not prevent Enda McGinley lining out against Armagh on 31 May. McGinley sustained the injury in Errigal Ciaran’s Tyrone Championship win over Donaghmore on Saturday.

“It’s not ideal but it will not stop him,’’ Harte said.

Stephen O’Neill took a full part in training on Tuesday and emerged unscathed but he still faces a battle to be fit for the Ulster SFC clash.

“It’s encouraging for Stephen but there is still some way to go yet,’’ added Harte.
