Fathers’ footsteps
Kilmacud’s victory over Crossmaglen Rangers was achieved with a team which included Pat Burke at left corner-forward and his father Pat was wing-back on the side managed by Tommy Lyons which won their only other title back in 1995 against Bellaghy.
Pat Burke senior is a former Clare footballer, who previously played with Kilmurry/Ibrickane. They were Munster champions two years ago.
Twelve months ago, the St Vincent’s team which also claimed a second title for the famed Dublin club included Eoin Brady at full-back.
The irony is that they defeated Nemo Rangers in the final,
because his father Kevin won
a medal at midfield with Nemo back in 1979 against Scotstown.
Interestingly, that ‘79 team
included Billy Morgan’s older brother Noel and his son William was a member of Nemo’s last winning team of 2003.
Billy Morgan’s son Brian (BRIAIN) also won a medal — as sub goalkeeper — while Morgan himself was captain of their first winning team in 1973 (against St Vincent’s in a replay). He was also associated with several other winning teams.
Fan Larkin and Brian Cody both share that distinction in hurling. They were members of James Stephen’s winning combinations in 1976 and 1982 (against
Mount Sion, the only other
Waterford team to contest a
final).
Their sons Philly and Donncha were medal-winners four years ago against Athenry.
Meanwhile, Kilmacud’s Mark Vaughan finished top scorer in the club football championship with 2-32, while sharing the honours for top individual score with Nemo’s Paul Kerrigan. Vaughan scored 1-8 against Newtown Blues, while Kerrigan notched 2-5 against Kerins O’Rahillys.
In hurling, Henry Shefflin was leading scorer overall with 0-35, while Joe Canning (who only played two games) finished in third place behind Simon Whelahan (0-22). Canning added 0-9 on Tuesday to the 2-5 he scored against Ballyhale in the All-Ireland semi-final.
At individual level, former Cork player Pat Ryan got the biggest score, 0-13 against Clonlara in the first round of the Munster championship. He finished fourth in the overall table.
