THE Kildare footballers are on the same wavelength as Kieran McGeeney in accepting that they still have a lot to learn if they are to be able to compete on a more equitable basis with the stronger counties in the championship.

Sunday’s draw with Cork in St Conleth’s Park was considered only satisfactory up to the point that it signified continuing progress from last year, with both the manager and team captain John Doyle agreeing that it was a game they should definitely have won.

Readily acknowledging the contribution of co-selectors Paul Grimley (formerly part of Joe Kernan’s management team in Armagh) and Niall Carew (ex-Kildare player), McGeeney balances a lack of maturity with the positives that his team is competing and scoring too.
