Dempsey in frame for Meath post

LUKE DEMPSEY is in the frame to succeed Colm Coyle as Meath manager after county board officials met with him in Mullingar last week.

The Rochfortbridge-based schoolteacher, who has also been nominated for the vacancy in Sligo, would become the first outsider to manage the Meath senior team if appointed. It would be entirely ironic if Dempsey is appointed to the role after the heartbreak the Royals inflicted on him during his time in charge of Westmeath.

Meath beat their neighbours four times in the championship between 2001 and 2003, despite the fact that Westmeath had ample opportunities to end their poor record against the Royals in their six meetings (two finished in draws) during the same period.

Eamonn O’Brien, who served as a selector under Sean Boylan, remains favourite to succeed Colm Coyle, but Dempsey’s experience of managing Westmeath, Carlow and Longford, as well as the Leinster inter-provincial side, could yet prove decisive.

Meanwhile, there are six contenders vieing for the position of Donegal football manager.

After applications closed, Declan Bonner, John Joe Doherty, Michael Houston, Francie Martin, Jim McGuinness and Charlie Mulgrew had formally declared their interest.
