City gripped by hurling final fever

MUNSTER final fever has gripped Limerick in a way that is challenging the hype of last year’s Heineken Cup win, with a massive demand for tickets.

It’s 11 years since Limerick won a Munster senior hurling title and you’d know it in the city and county this week ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Waterford.

Inspirational Limerick forward Ollie Moran intended yesterday to take time out from the build up as he was brought on board to announce the frequencies for the region’s new music radio station, SPIN South West.

But even during the photo-call the hurler was inundated by well wishers.

“It’s crazy here. I could spend the day and night on the street talking about hurling and dealing with requests for tickets and, while it is constant, it is lovely to be in this position,” he said.

“Everyone here wants to talk hurling and we’ve been long enough out of the limelight and really now want to go and do justice to what are the most amazing supporters in the country.

“We all witnessed what happened with Munster rugby last year in the city around the Heineken Cup and now we have it all over again and I’m delighted, that it is hurling and Limerick’s turn to get this type of focus as it can only do the game good,” he added.

He received a message of support from another sporting icon of the region, Keith Wood, who is one of the backers of SPIN South West, which goes on air in the coming weeks.

Wood, who is based in London, was gripped by Limerick’s trilogy with Tipp as he watched from afar.

“Ollie has been outstanding and if he can reproduce the form he has shown so far Limerick will be very hard to beat.”

The radio station as announced yesterday will broadcast on 102 to 103 FM across Limerick, Kerry and Clare and on 94.7 in North Tipperary and South West Laois areas.
