McCarthy the Glenville ace as Ballingeary mastered in drab affair

LAST minute replacement Diarmuid McCarthy emerged the match-winner for Glenville, who struggled to beat Ballingeary in the opening round of the Evening Echo Cork Co Premier IFC at Donoughmore yesterday.

Drafted in just before the start and wearing the number 17 shirt McCarthy scored the only goal in the 40th minute of a drab encounter — a strike which ultimately proved the main difference between two very mediocre sides.

Glenville did turn on the style in the opening sequences with two points from John O’Keeffe and the stylish Paudie Cahill but the East Cork side subsequently flattered to deceive.

They were only to score once more in the first-half — another point from Cahill in the 15th minute — while playing with the advantage of a slight wind.

Ballingeary, with Peader Concannon playing his heart out, gradually fought their way into the reckoning after squandering a number of opportunities to make a marked impression on the very lack-lustre proceedings.

Hitting their only purple patch over the hour, Ballingeary scored four points on the trot to lead 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time. Amazingly, after this great run, they were not to score again.

With Ballingeary falling by the wayside after the break, Glenville took control. Brendan Healy pointed to reduce the deficit to the bare minimum before Mccarthy pounced for the all important goal shortly afterwards.

Both sides kicked some of the worst wides ever seen at this picturesque venue before McCarthy scored the insurance point for Glenville in the closing stages. But it was all meaningless because both sides go through to the third round. However, unless both pull up their socks their life-span will be short.
