Kilworth squeeze past Dungourney

MISSION accomplished. Kilworth are the new Evening Echo Cork junior hurling champions, but not without a mighty battle from never-say-die Dungourney.

Under lights at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday, the Avondhu men edged home 0-13 to 0-12 after a wonderfully entertaining hour’s hurling.

In the end it came down to Adrian Mannix’s injury-time point. And it was fitting that the man of the match should deliver. He galvanised a tenacious Kilworth half-forward line when moved from the inside line when the battle was at its hottest.

A draw might have been a fitting result, but after missing a free chance to win it at the death, Mannix was coolness personified in those electric extra -time minutes when he fired over the winner that lit up Páirc Uí Rinn even brighter.

Scorers for Kilworth: P Lynch (frees) and A Mannix (0-1 free) 0-4 each, E Pierce 0-3, T Twomey, B Tobin 0-1.

Dungourney: S Casey 0-7 (0-3 frees 0-1 ‘65), P Kelleher 0-2, D Leahy, L Ahern, Ken Kelleher 0-1 each.

BISHOPSTOWN hurlers will spend the next couple of months fondly reliving the events of 2006. At Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday they added the Evening Echo Cork Co U21 AHC trophy to the intermediate silverware from the previous week, although they left it to the dying moments for Michael Power to snatch the winning goal and beat Newtownshandrum 1-9 to 1-8.

Scorers for Bishopstown: P Cronin 0-6 (0-3 frees, 0-1 65m), M Power 1-0, S O’Neill, I Jones and P O’Donoghue 0-1 each.

Newtownshandrum: M Thompson 1-2, R Farrissey 0-3, R Clifford 0-2 (0-1 free), C Naughton 0-1.

IT WAS all too easy for Castletownbere in an error-ridden Evening Echo Cork Co IFC semi-final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday where three goals proved too much of an obstacle for Ballyclough to overcome in a game that will hardly live in the memory. Castletown winning 3-8 to 0-10.

Scorers for Castletownbere: S Spencer 2-0, A O’Sullivan 1-2, A O’Regan 0-3 (0-2 frees), P Harrington, L Harrington, S O’Regan 0-1 each.

Ballyclough: C O’Neill 0-4 (0-1 free), P O’Flynn 0-3 (0-2 frees), L Fitzgerald, J Aherne, T O’Connor 0-1 each.

CARRY on Courceys. The Ballinspittle battlers showed at Ballincollig on Saturday that they are more than a hurling force with a fine performance against city champions Whites Cross to book a place in the Evening Echo Cork Co JFC semi-final, 1-11 to 1-6.

Scorers for Courcey Rovers: D Murray 1-1, V Hurley 0-4 (frees), M O’Donovan 0-3, B Hayes, K J Murphy and A Hegarty 0-1 each.

Whites Cross: C Kelleher 1-2 (0-2 frees), D Kelly, K Buckley, E Buckley, P O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

GRENAGH negotiated the opening fence in the JAFC by beating Glanworth 0-10 to 0-6 in a dour quarter final in Kanturk on Saturday.

The Mid-Cork champions rolled up their sleeves in a productive spell midway through the second half to chalk up a sequence of telling points.

Scorers for Grenagh: A O’Neill 0-3, M Barry 0-2 (0-1’45, 0-1f), S Coleman (f), M Kenny, K Desmond, T Kenny and A Kenny 0-1 each.

Glanworth: F Fitzgibbon 0-4(0-3f, 0-1’45), P O’Driscoll (f) and M Sheehan 0-1 each.

FR O’NEILL’S bridged an eight-year gap to win their third East Cork JAFC title 3-10 to 2-9 at Lisgoold yesterday, following an energy-sapping 80 minutes.

In spite of a spirited rally by Bride Rovers, O’Neill’s deserved the honours, out-scoring their challengers 1-4 to 1-0 in extra-time.

Scorers for Fr O’Neill’s: K Wall 2-0, R Murphy 1-1, J Holland 0-3, S Harrington and J Flavin 0-2 each, P Butler and E McCarthy (free) 0-1 each.
