COUNTY Board finances will be hit by a severe fall-off in interest in the championship qualifier games in hurling and football this past year, which was reflected in low attendances for many of the rounds.

Figures released to the counties at the week-end Central Council meeting showed that income was down substantially from 2005, by as much as 25%.

“I think that will bring home to the counties the point that was made (at the Special Congress) about playing ‘useless games’ that are predictable,’’ said Director-General Liam Mulvihill. .”
