Playing with the strong wind behind them holders Killenaule opened the scoring with a pointed Joe Caesar free within a minute of the start but scores from Vinnie Doheny, Eoin Kelly and his brother Paul, saw Mullinahone ahead 0-4 to 0-1 after six minutes.
An improving Killenaule responded with seven unanswered points from Michael Farrell, Joe Caesar, Declan Fanning, Tony Doyle, Pat Kerwick and Philip Blake to lead 0-8 to 0-4.
Killenaule were rocked when Eoin Kelly crashed home an unstoppable shot to the net after a slick Brian O’Meara and Paul Kelly build-up had opened a gap in the defence.
A further exchange of points between Killenaule’s Caesar and Doyle and Mullinahone’s Edward O’Brien and Eoin Kelly, left Killenaule leading 0-10 to 1-6 at half-time.
Having tied the game with the opening point of the second half from play, Eoin Kelly then pointed his fifth free and when substitute Donal Coady also hit the target, Mullinahone were ahead 1-9 to 0-10.
In the 41st minute Paul Kelly was fouled in front of goal and when Eoin drilled home another shot the champions were ahead 2-10 to 0-12.
Trailing 2-13 to 0-14 with eight minutes to go, Killenaule then got the goal they needed when Niall Bergin got inside the Mullinahone cover.
Paul Kelly then restored Mullinahone’s three point advantage while Killenaule responded with late scores from Farrell and Doyle to leave them a point adrift at the final whistle.
